Viggiano, small town of the south-west Basilicata, to 1023 ms on the level of the sea, surrounded by the mountains of the “ Appennino lucano”, on a territory that is extended for 89,03 Kmqs. It's surrounded from laughing nature, rich of uncontaminated sources of water, of flora and of fauna , too.It overlooks the tallest part in the valley called “ Val' d' Agri” with his curious outline of turned upside-down " spoon ", due to the presence of two adjoining hills , a taller, called Castle, the other lower, called Montecalvario. |

The town’s structure is very similar to that of so many other Basilicata 's small centers : the " suburb " is unravelled in tortuous alleys that are climbed toward the small rests of the feudal castle, trace by now few visible of its history. The town is also known for its traditions, particularly that religious, tied up to the cult of the Black Madonna and that musical connected to the construction of musical tools and the sound of the harp, of the flute, of the violin and of the bagpipe. After the last census, it counts 3.187 inhabitants. The active population is fairly distributed in the agricultural sector, industrial and in the tertiary one. Remarkable the rate of unemployment that, also in the past, it has been to the origin of a notable migratory flow. Since the second half eight hundred has been center of important services and it is recently to the center of tourist and industrial development process . Viggiano is at the center of a large area that today interests ENI Agip's extractive activities . |
